Regents to consider new leader at CCSN

The selection of the Community College of Southern Nevada's interim president tops a long list of issues before the Board of Regents this week.
The 11-member state panel that oversees the University and Community College System of Nevada will meet at 1:15 p.m. Thursday at CCSN's Henderson campus, 700 College Park Drive.
This week, regents Chairwoman Jill Derby of Gardnerville and interim Chancellor Tom Andres were gathering opinions from various CCSN factions on the temporary replacement for outgoing President Richard Moore, who on Saturday will become president of the yet-to-be-built state college in Henderson.
Among the names being bandied about as possible interim CCSN president are Robert Silverman, the school's vice president of academic affairs; Al Ruter, CCSN vice president of finance, and Candace Kant, the school's senate faculty president.
"We have set quite a bit of time aside (Tuesday and Wednesday) to listen to what people want to tell us," Derby said. "They feel a lot is at stake in who gets the reigns of leadership."
Regent Steve Sisolak agreed: "This is very important, especially since the community college is going through the accreditation process. I would like to see someone selected who has been involved in the accreditation process and is familiar with the budget."
At Thursday's meeting Derby also will appoint a five-member regent committee to conduct a nationwide search for a permanent CCSN president. It is estimated that such a search could take six to eight months to complete.
