Youth basketball league registration being taken
Registration for YMCA of Southern Nevada's Youth Basketball League is open through Saturday. This coed league is for boys and girls ages 8-13. Participants learn fair play, teamwork, sportsmanship and good character. Call the YMCA of Southern Nevada for more information at 877-9622.
Program of historical tales planned Wednesday
The Lake Mead National Recreation Area is holding a program of historical tales and local lore at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Alan Bible Visitor Center near Boulder City.
National Park Service Ranger Michelle Moore Simmons, a veteran of more than three years of research, reading and visiting locales around Lake Mead, will present the program. She will explain why these stories are reflective of the history of the park and the Southwest. Call 293-8947.
Seniors, youths join forces on project
Adults from the West Flamingo Senior Center and youth from the Guinn Community Center are coordinating the creation of an inter-generational peace quilt following the theme "Peace Between the Generations."
Quilt sections will be accepted Jan. 17-19 at the West Flamingo Center, 6255 W. Flamingo Road. The quilt will be publicly displayed at a Peace Week program and reception at 2:20 p.m. Jan. 20. Call 455-7742.
Hospice offering course in taking care of patients
Nathan Adelson Hospice will offer a 24-hour Volunteer Education Training Course that will provide potential volunteers with the tools and resources needed to offer emotional and practical support throughout their volunteer service with terminally ill hospice patients and their families.
After completion of the education course, volunteers are needed with the availability of three to six hours each week. For more information, call Shari Diebold or Sharon Williams at (888) 281-8646.
Extended Studies Center plans spring convocation
UNLV's Extended Studies Center for Lifelong Learning will hold its spring convocation 10 a.m.-noon Saturday in the Richard Tam Alumni Center.
EXCELL will sponsor 21 study groups for seniors during the spring semester, and study group leaders will preview the topics to be offered at the Saturday meeting. Call Lori Slinn at 895-4469.
Immunizations
Health District immunization clinics are open each week in Southern Nevada. Immunizations are provided without charge to children and young adults under the age of 21 in any of four public health centers and 36 satellite clinics. The following clinics will be open this week, Jan. 12 - 18:
