Reno police officer’s “sick leave” questioned
Monday, Jan. 10, 2000 | 9:12 a.m.
The Washoe County District Attorney's Office decided not to pursue criminal charges against Officer Kevin Barnes after a month-long probe into alleged misuse of sick leave.
Reno police detectives were assigned to the case in November after Barnes' supervisor noticed that Barnes had been paid for time worked when it appeared he had actually called in sick.
During the investigation, detectives discovered that Barnes' sick leave bank was 82 hours overdrawn.
Barnes told investigators that when he turned in late timecards he had difficulty remembering what days he had called in sick and what days he had actually worked.
But he insisted he had "done nothing to intentionally defraud the city."
