Activist group protests nuclear waste dump
Monday, Jan. 10, 2000 | 3:43 a.m.
Protesters intent on blocking a nuclear waste dump in Nevada conducted a mock nuclear spill in downtown Las Vegas Monday.
Members of the Shundahai Network brought a mock nuclear storage cask to downtown's Glitter Gulch on a flatbed truck.
The protest was designed to make the public aware of the final public comment period on the environmental impact statement for the proposed repository at Yucca Mountain, 90 miles northwest of Las Vegas.
To illustrate what the protesters claim could happen if the dump is built, 10 demonstrators staged a mock nuclear spill at the edge of the Fremont Street Experience.
"Our main goal is to get people there to give their comment," said John Hadder, a protester from Reno. "Of course we have our own position on this, but just want people to go out regardless of how you feel about Yucca."
The hearings will be conducted Tuesday at the Grant Sawyer State Building here.
