Melton, 68, was traveling in England when he became ill, and his discharge date is undetermined. He was responding well to treatment and listed in fair condition.
Since 1957, Melton has held various positions, including editor and publisher, with the local newspaper. He has written his thrice-weekly column for more than 20 years.
He also was on the board of the Gannett Co., the newspaper's parent organization.
In 1982, Melton survived a heart attack. In 1984, he was diagnosed with lymphatic cancer, but beat the disease with a combination of chemotherapy and radiation treatments.
