Letter: Employers’ cries of labor shortage have hollow ring
Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000 | 10:16 a.m.
If an employer offers "free child care," doesn't this perk cause a parent to choose the more generous employer? If an executive secretary was paid $30,000 in Los Angeles, why should she take a $10,000 pay cut to work in Las Vegas? She won't; she'll turn down the job, contributing to the illusion that Las Vegas has a labor shortage!
If a limousine driver is paid minimum wage because there are too many limousine companies in Las Vegas, if taxicab drivers suffer every time the Taxicab Authority Board adds more cabs without compensating drivers for the loss in income, won't these businesses be loudly complaining that they need drivers?
Final proof that there is no labor shortage is in our streets; the homeless litter our streets!
