Frohlich fires in 24 as UNLV cruises by Navy

Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2000 | 11:02 a.m.

No mercy.

That's the way UNLV women's basketball coach Regina Miller would like to see her team play every game.

She figures that the game is 80 percent mental and 20 percent physical so mental mistakes such as losing a big lead are killers.

The Lady Rebels must have acted on Miller's decree in a 74-56 win over Navy on Tuesday night.

The victory improved UNLV to 7-5, and Navy dropped to 2-7.

"I think controlling the boards was important for us," Miller said. "We rebounded the ball well.

"We shot 50 percent from the floor and that was also huge. The positive thing about tonight is that we held onto our lead and built on it."

UNLV's Linda Frohlich led all scorers with 24 points and a game-high 13 rebounds while Carlesa Dixon had 11 points.

Against Navy, the Lady Rebels wanted to eliminate the mental mistakes that cost them a tough 69-65 road loss to Pacific on Monday.

By outmuscling Navy and playing tough defense, they did.

The game was tied for the third and final time at 12-12 with 5:07 left in the first half before UNLV took over.

The Lady Rebels then outscored Navy 27-14 for a 39-26 halftime lead and never let up.

"After the loss to Pacific, We talked about focusing for the remainder of the year on playing hard," Miller said. "During that game, we made three or four mistakes that cost us."

Erica Hayes led Navy with 23 points and Jennifer Bombinski had 11.

Although the Lady Rebels outrebounded Navy 39-23, they committed 26 turnovers, three more than Navy.
