Old Farmer says snow for Nevada
Monday, Jan. 3, 2000 | 5:04 a.m.
Nevadans better stock up on wood and snap up some heavy clothes, if the folks who prepare the Old Farmer's Almanac are on the mark.
The current edition of the venerable publication predicts temperatures that will put Las Vegas 5 degrees below normal this month, 7 below normal next month and 3 below in March.
It says colder-than-normal temperatures then will continue through the summer of 2000.
Forecasters scoff at the almanac, and even the magazine's publishers concede their outlooks are less than scientific.
It shows.
The period of Dec. 24-31 was supposed to be very cold. It was mild.
And despite its pleasant winters and southwest locale, Las Vegas is placed by the almanac in the same climatic region as Reno, Salt Lake City and Boise, Idaho.
The almanac, therefore, predicts heavy snows for Las Vegas and the other cities next week, the second week in February and the last week of March.
It snows in Las Vegas about once a decade.
