Shelter gets help from Carpet Barn
Carpet Barn Inc., a Las Vegas based floor covering retailer, donated two carloads of diapers, shoes and clothing to the Shade Tree shelter this month, filling most of the items on the shelter's wish list.
The donations were made by Carpet Barn employees, their family members and guests who attend Carpet Barn's holiday party.
Shade Tree is a 24-hour emergency shelter for women and children in crisis. It assists nearly 1,000 people monthly.
$50,000 awarded to several local agencies
The PacifiCare Foundation awarded more than $50,000 last month to six Southern Nevada nonprofit organizations.
The Clark County Public Guardian received $10,000 for its Guardian training program; Clark County School District Health Services received $8,840 for its Assessing Asthmatic Students program; Economic Opportunity Board received $10,000 for its adult day care program; the Salvation Army in Henderson received $9,789 for its adult health day care program; the Las Vegas Natural History Museum was given $5,000 for the Open Door program targeting at-risk and special needs children; and United Seniors Inc. received $10,000 to help purchase a new van for its Moapa Valley senior transportation and Meals for the Elderly program.
Family center collecting items for schoolchildren
The Bright Horizons Family Center is collecting book bags and backpacks filled with notebooks, pencils and winter clothes to send to elementary schools in Kosovo.
Donations may be dropped off at the McCarran Child Development Center, 1788 E. Russell Road, between 5:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday through the end of January.
Free cholesterol screening
A free cholesterol screening, sponsored by University Medical Center's Silver Advantage program, will be offered to Clark County residents age 50 and over 8:30-9:15 a.m. Jan. 12 at Nellis Quick Care, 61 N. Nellis Blvd. To schedule an appointment, call 382-2095.
State of the City luncheon set Jan. 13
The North Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the third annual State of the City luncheon 11 a.m. Jan. 13 at Cashman Center's Club Level Restaurant.
Mayor Michael Montandon will talk about North Las Vegas and its future. Cost is $25 per person. Call Pamela Dittmar, 633-1529 for reservations.
The chamber is also holding a mixer 4:30 p.m. Jan. 26 at the NAH Craig-Losee Community Worksite, 4336 Losee Road.
Nominations are being accepted now
Nominations are being accepted through Feb. 15 for the 15th annual Rose Awards, sponsored by the Professional Black Women's Alliance.
The awards honor women who are achievers in all areas of life, including caretakers, church workers, nursery school teachers and professional women. The 2000 Rose Awards Banquet is scheduled for July 15.
