UNLV student receives highest honor

Sergeant Cheri R. Smith, a military specialist, received the Nevada Army Guard's highest recognition this month as she was honored as the top solider of 2000.

Smith has been a soldier with the 72nd Military Police Company in Henderson since July 1995. She attends UNLV and has completed her military Primary Leadership Development Course.

Smith's awards include the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal and the Army Reserve Component Overseas Training Ribbon.

The Soldier of the Year is selected by a board of senior enlisted personnel who interview the nominees. Brigadier General Robert J. Hayes, commander, Nevada Army National Guard made the presentation.
