A 45-year-old Las Vegas church treasurer and investment advisor accused of embezzling $200,000 from his church and swindling $1 million from his clients has entered a plea agreement.
Jeffrey L. Boone told U.S. District Judge Johnnie Rawlinson Thursday that he was guilty of mail fraud and filing a false tax return. As a result of the plea agreement, he faces a sentence of between two and three years in prison when sentenced June 8. He could also be ordered to pay full restitution.
According to court documents, Boon convinced his customers through lies to invest their money with him and then used at least $860,000 of that money for his own purposes.
Boone had told his customers that the money was to be used to construct shopping centers and casino executive housing, among other things, the indictment says. The name of his firm was CR Consultants.
The $200,000 embezzled from First Presbyterian Church, 1515 W. Charleston Blvd., was deposited into CR Consultants' bank accounts, the indictment states.
According to court records, Boone also reported to the IRS he earned about $29,00, despite the fact he made $785,000 that particular year. The income tax return showed that he owed $5,000 on the $29,000 income, when in fact, he would've owed $313,000 if he had reported his true earnings.
