Police said they received conflicting accounts from those involved and no immediate arrests were made following Wednesday's incident. Reports will be forwarded to the city attorney's office to determine if charges are filed.
The teens admitted they exchanged obscene gestures with the other driver and his passenger.
They told police the construction worker then followed the students and used his van to cut off their vehicle while traveling on U.S. 395.
The alleged assailant then reportedly approached the students' Jeep, smashed the driver's side window and punched the driver.
He then allegedly pulled another student out of the vehicle and punched him, police said.
The man was later located at a construction site. But Officer Marvin Barnes said information provided by a woman who drove by at the time of the attack kept police from making an arrest.
Barnes would not elaborate, the Reno Gazette-Journal reported.
