Avalanche warning issued for areas of Mount Charleston
Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000 | 12:03 p.m.
Due to heavy snow and rain, the U.S. Forest Service issued an avalanche warning Thursday for the backcountry areas of Mount Charleston.
The avalanche hazard is considered to be extreme, meaning widespread areas of unstable snow exist outside the developed Lee Canyon ski area.
Avalanches are certain on some snow-covered open slopes and gullies. Large destructive avalanches are possible, the forest service said.
Backcountry travel should be avoided.
The warning, which expires Friday, does not apply to the Lee Canyon ski area where avalanche control is normally conducted.
