Union sues builder, trade group

A Las Vegas carpenters union is seeking a court order to compel an Anaheim, Calif.-based contractor and the Nevada Contractors Association to settle a dispute over the contractor's covered workers' unpaid wages.
In a U.S. District Court suit, the Southern California-Nevada Regional Council of Carpenters alleged Keenan Hopkins Suder & Stowell Contractors Inc. delayed the settlement by failing to appoint two of its members to a Board of Adjustment and appear for a scheduled hearing, which is part of a settlement procedure.
The suit said Keenan Hopkins' failure to settle the dispute has caused "great resentment among the employees in the bargaining unit, and seriously threatens and jeopardizes the amicable relations formerly existing between the parties."
The union -- which filed a written grievance on Nov. 23, 1999, on behalf of Keenan Hopkins' covered workers who allegedly weren't properly paid -- alleged the defendants repeatedly failed to attend a hearing before the board on the dates suggested by the union.
Keenan Hopkins declined comment.
