Highlights from Tuesday’s testimony in the Edwards trial

Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000 | 10:59 a.m.

Here are some highlights from Tuesday's testimony.

As a birthday present to Edwards in 1994, Brotherton had a set of wooden chips and a carrying case made for Edwards, Brotherton testified.

Brotherton wrapped the chips in bags and presented them to Edwards at a meeting arranged by Shetler, Brotherton said.

When Edwards began to open the bags he suddenly said "No, not in here," Brotherton quoted Edwards as saying.

Shetler explained to Edwards that it was OK to unwrap the bag because it was a present, Brotherton said. "Those are chips," Brotherton quoted Shetler as saying.

"From what casino did they come from," Edwards replied, Brotherton said.

Edwards then unwrapped the chips, saw that EWE was printed on their face and realized the chips were a gift, Brotherton said.

Later, as Shetler was escorting Brotherton through the governor's mansion, the men ran into Edwards' personal aide and co-defendant, Andrew Martin.

Brotherton said Martin asked him about the proposal. Shetler took Martin aside and began yelling at him Brotherton said he didn't hear what Shetler said, but heard Martin say "everybody's getting rich off this but me and I'm getting tired of it."

Brotherton testified he thought the outburst meant everyone was getting rich off the riverboat business.

Shortly before the meeting, however, Shetler pulled the men aside to tell them that their riverboat would get approved - along with the competing the Isle of Capri casino riverboat, Brotherton said.

When asked how Shetler knew, Brotherton said "he got all of his information from Stephen Edwards."

Fifteen jurors remain. Twelve will deliberate that case and three others are alternates.
