Black studies department offers UNLV conference
The fourth annual African American Student Achievement Conference will be offered 7:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Saturday at UNLV's Moyer Student Union.
The theme is "Cultural Pride in the New Millennium" and will feature lectures by Maulana Karenga, creator of Kwanzaa and chairman of the Department of Black Studies at California State University, Long Beach, and Alfred "Coach" Powell, author of "Message in a Bottle: The 40 oz. Greeks, anti-defamation group combine forces
Greek Leadership Day at UNLV will feature a two-hour workshop 10 a.m. to noon Sunday on "A Campus of Difference" followed by several breakout sessions. The workshop, funded by a grant from Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity Foundation, will be led by the Anti-Defamation League. Some 200 UNLV students are expected to participate in the day's events. Desert Springs Hospital seeks Monday donors
A blood drive will be held from 7 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday at the Desert Springs Hospital Medical Center, 2075 E. Flamingo Road.

Black Mountain Recreation Area to host workshop
A rape prevention workshop is being offered 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Black Mountain Recreation Center, 599 Greenway Road.
Anyone who is 13 years of age or more is welcome to participate. The free workshop is sponsored by the City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department. Advanced registration is recommended. Call 565-2880.
High I.Q.: Testing sessions held locally
Mensa, the High I.Q. Society will be holding a testing session at 10 a.m. Saturday. The cost is $30.

Jewish federation has business luncheon
UNLV football coach John Robinson will speak to the Business and Professional Division of the Jewish Federation of Las Vegas at a luncheon 11:45 a.m. Monday at the Golden Nugget hotel-casino. Cost is $20. To make reservations, call 732-0556.
Rabbi speaks on embryos, treatment termination
Rabbi Richard Address will speak about bioethics 7 p.m. Saturday at Congregation Ner Tamid, 2761 Emerson Ave. The speech, co-sponsored by the Jewish Federation's Maimonides Society and Health Care Division, will focus on two scenarios involving what to do with unneeded fertilized embryos and the withholding or termination of treatment. Classes to offer basics of CPR instruction
The Jewish Community Center is offering a CPR course 1-5 p.m. Sunday at 3909 S. Maryland Parkway, fourth floor. The course will cover the basics of adult, child and infant CPR and participants will earn a two-year certification. The cost is $24 for JCC members and $30 for nonmembers. Seafarers sought for 'Float, Go or Sink'
The city of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department is now accepting registration for an indoor boat race, "Float, Go or Sink," from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday at the Lorin L. Williams Indoor Pool, 500 Palo Verde Drive. The entry fee is $10 per vessel, and participants can enter as many vessels as they wish.
Participants will create their vessels from a list of specific materials. Contest rules and regulations will be available upon registration. Call 565-2123.
Wildlife group co-sponsors educational workshop
A hunter's safety workshop will be held 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday at the Lorna J. Kesterson Valley View Recreation Center, 500 Harris St. The workshop is designed to reinforce hunter safety awareness and conservation.
The two-part workshop is co-sponsored by the Nevada Division of Wildlife and the City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department. It is recommended for hunters of all skill levels from age 11 and up. Participants successfully completing the curriculum will earn their hunters safety cards. For registration, call 486-5127.

All ages are invited to view the films "Mufaro's Beautiful Daughter," "Blue Dashiki" and "Go Tell It: A Tribute to Mahalia Jackson," at 3:45 p.m. Tuesday at the Sunrise Library, 5400 Harris Ave. Call 453-1104.
