Brownback touts gambling bill

Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000 | 9:31 a.m.

Brownback and Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., introduced the bill earlier this month.

"It is unseemly and inappropriate to bet on the athletic success of America's young people," Brownback said Monday during a Statehouse news conference.

The bill would extend a ban on such gambling in 46 states to all 50 states. Delaware, Montana, Nevada and Oregon are exempt from the current ban, but Nevada is the only state that allows widespread sports betting.

Brownback said he is targeting large bets placed in Nevada, not small office pools.

The 10 college gambling scandals throughout the country during the 1990s exceeded the number in all other decades combined, Brownback said.

The senator was joined by several sports representatives from across the state.

University of Kansas Athletics Director Bob Frederick said he doesn't know of any gambling scandals that have occurred in the state.

However, he also said the National Collegiate Athletic Association is "very concerned about this serious problem."
