Phone company expansion picks up speed

The company that formerly operated in Las Vegas as MGC Communications Inc. is accelerating its business plan by a year and tripling the size of its operations nationwide this year.
Rochester, N.Y.-based Mpower Communications Corp. plans to offer its communications services using high-speed, high-capacity Digital Subscriber Line technology to business customers in the 50 largest metropolitan areas of the country.
Mpower President and Chief Executive Officer Rolla Huff said the move is one of the largest DSL deployments in the country. By the end of 2000, the company plans to have about 35 million access lines, representing 5 million businesses or about 45 percent of the total U.S. business population.
The rollout is being financed by the $540 million in proceeds from a recent stock offering.
The company, which operates in Las Vegas, Southern California, Chicago, Atlanta and South Florida, was known as MGC when it was headquartered in Las Vegas.
