Friday, Feb. 18, 2000 | 10:48 a.m.
The UNLV men's and women's swim teams both surged into second place after the first day of the Mountain West Conference championships at Oklahoma City.
The men were 76 points behind Brigham Young while the women trailed the Cougars by only 21 1/2 points.
The Rebels were victorious in the men's and women's 500 freesytles, 200 intermediate medleys, 400 relay medleys, the men's 50 freestyle and placed third in the women's 50 freestyle. Lorena Diaconescu and Jacint Simon controlled the 500 freestyle events, swimming a 4:49.50 and 4:21.91. Diaconescu set a school record in her effort and both made the B-cut for the NCAA Championships, but need to make at least another B-cut to qualify.
Erica Korb and David Schick placed first in the 200-IM. Korb swam a time of 2:05.23 and Schick led the men with a time of 1:50.99. Kelly Goddard swam to a third-place finish in the 50-free, posting a time of 23.86. Garrett Wood earned a B-cut by swimming a 20.31 in the men's 50-free and also broke a UNLV school record.
Competition continues today at the Aquatic Center on the campus of Oklahoma City Community College and will end on Saturday.
