Letter: Yucca experience is nothing new
Friday, Feb. 18, 2000 | 9:21 a.m.
The deja vu I experienced when I read the Feb. 4 articles on Yucca Mountain prompts this reply:
The WIPP (Waste Isolation Pilot Plant) located in Carlsbad, N.M., (read Whoville), is indeed a pilot plant, because the methods being used in the plan to open Yucca Mountain have already been tested on us. We are also geologically unsuitable for disposal of nuclear waste, and we also believed the Environmental Protection Agency would protect us!
The city of Carlsbad gives "free" water to the WIPP, yet raised water and sewer rates locally in one giant jump! The rationale was that the Department of Energy placed a 6-inch water line out to the WIPP site, which enables "economic development."
The proposal to ignore disqualifying factors is tantamount to premeditated contamination. Computer models are subject to manipulation of data.
Finally, beware of any legislation that gets on the "fast track"!
