NLV Council approves homes across from pig farm

Single family homes will soon be built directly across the street from a pig farm in North Las Vegas.
The North Las Vegas City Council voted 5-2 Wednesday to change the zoning across from R.C. Farms at North Fifth Street and Hammer Lane to R-1 residential from ranch estates. Council members Shari Buck and William Robinson cast the dissenting votes.
Vegas Equities, a real estate company, will buy the property from a family trust to develop single family homes.
The matter passed the Planning Commission by a 4-3 margin on Dec. 22. Several of the commissioners were concerned about the odor from the 6,000-head hog farm, at Ann Road and North Fifth Street.
Bob Combs, whose R.C. Farms occupies a 150-acre island of county land within the city, said he has been approached numerous times by developers to sell the property. He maintains that he would move his farm if a suitable location can be found.
