New Mexico Senate OKs tuition freeze bill

With the legislative session drawing to a close today, there was little chance of its passage by the House.
But the bill sponsored by Sen. Stuart Ingle, R-Portales, signaled lawmakers' dissatisfaction with tuition raises they say have worsened the funding problems of the lottery scholarship program.
The bill would guarantee freshman students on lottery scholarships the same tuition for four years. The following year's freshmen could be charged higher tuition, but it would be frozen for them for four years.
The Senate approved the bill Wednesday on a vote of 29-3.
