LV casino, business leaders backing McCain
Thursday, Feb. 17, 2000 | 10:29 a.m.
Cindy McCain, wife of GOP presidential contender John McCain, will attend a Feb. 28 Las Vegas fundraiser on behalf of her husband.
Sponsored by the Nevadans for McCain Host Committee, the $500 per person fundraiser will be held at the home of Paul and Sue Lowden, the controlling shareholders of Santa Fe Gaming Corp. Co-chairs of the committee are Sue Lowden, president of the Santa Fe hotel-casino, and local real estate developer Mark Fine.
The committee also includes boxing promoter Bob Arum; MGM Grand Inc. executives Bill Hornbuckle, Terry Lanni and Dan Wade; Bob Broadbent, the leading consultant on the proposed Strip monorail system; Frank Pankratz, vice president with Del Webb Corp.; and Las Vegas Sun Vice President Danny Greenspun.
McCain has received considerable support from the gaming industry. Records compiled by the Center for Responsive Politics indicate McCain received $51,150 in donations from gaming executives through October 1999 -- making the casino industry the only major industry tracked by the center to donate more to McCain than to his rival, Texas Gov. George W. Bush. Bush received $42,550 in donations from casino companies over that period.
Donors to the McCain campaign over that period include Mirage Resorts Inc. Chairman and CEO Steve Wynn, Venetian owner Sheldon Adelson and Lanni.
