Council approves plans for new 28-story hotel on LV Boulevard

Thursday, Feb. 17, 2000 | 10:04 a.m.

Plans for a 28-story hotel-casino on a run-down stretch of Las Vegas Boulevard cleared another hurdle Wednesday when the Las Vegas City Council approved the project's expansion.

Several residents told the council they wanted to meet with developers to discuss the impact the towering structure will have on the 3.59-acre lot between Cincinnati and Cleveland avenues.

"I have a real concern about the parking," Todd Farlow told the board.

Consultant Greg Borgell and attorney Ed Garcia, who represent the project's owner, Charlie Frias, promised to meet with residents to discuss traffic and related concerns.

Frias, the owner of A-North Las Vegas Cab Co., is also president of Oxford Technology Inc. -- the company proposing the hotel-casino.

Plans call for a 322,226-square-foot tower and attached parking garage to replace the existing two-story El Mirador motel.

The item came back before the council for approval because Frias was able to obtain additional land to the west of the existing motel's 2.37 acres.

The proposed project will cost between $200 and 400 million.

"I totally approve of it," said resident Sharon Ritter. "Anything to improve that neighborhood is great."
