Editorial: Fame didn’t tarnish character of Schulz

Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2000 | 9:04 a.m.

Charles Schulz's death on Saturday -- just as newspapers prepared to run his farewell "Peanuts" comic strip on Sunday -- touched millions. Fans were enamored by Schulz's talent, but what made him so endearing was that he seemed to be one of us, having never lost touch with his Midwest roots. In short, Schulz didn't get too big for his britches.

The worldwide fame -- and millions of dollars -- that Schulz received would have changed nearly anyone else. Nowadays those who become famous usually are changed irrevocably, often turning into petulant prima donnas. Schulz, though, was the anti-celebrity in an age where celebrity worship trumped all else. Schulz's dedication to his art, and his refusal to let the trappings of fame change him, will be missed.
