UMC opens children's unit
University Medical Center opened a Children's Clinical Decision unit last month for pediatric patients that will allow physicians to observe children who need extra medical attention but not hospital care.
The five-bed unit will be used to serve children who have the flu, croup, asthma, congestion, nausea or children who have been poisoned.
In the past, children, too ill to go home but not ill enough to be admitted, had to wait in the Children's Emergency Department while their physician decided whether or not they needed to be admitted.
Boulder City seeks help upgrading library
The Boulder City High School library is looking for help updating its book collection. Most of its books are outdated by almost 30 years and do not address current needs of students and staff who rely on the library to support Nevada curricular requirements.
The library recently received $1,602 from Jim Sala and Dan Dyrdahl of Carpenters Local #1977 to purchase the 80-volume set of "Opposing Viewpoints," a standard book series in high school libraries.
For more information or to make a contribution, call 799-8200, ext. 35.
Private school has openings for students
A new independent school, currently under construction in Summerlin, is accepting admission applications for students entering kindergarten through fifth grade in September.
Alexander Dawson School is a nondenominational school focused on preparing students eventually to go to college.
The curriculum at Alexander Dawson places a heavy emphasis on the desert environment and Southwest culture. It stresses that students master a variety of areas -- verbal, logical-mathematical, spatial, musical, kinesthetic and academic.
Instruction in reading, science, Spanish and computing begins in kindergarten.
For admission and financial aid applications, call 838-0124.
$1,500 scholarships available for seniors
Clark County high school seniors who plan to enroll in an accredited college, university or vocational-technical school can apply for a one-time scholarship of $1,500 from the Simon Youth Foundation.
The foundation is a not-for-profit organization that provides educational and career development opportunities to youth.
Students may apply for the newly established community Scholarship Program at any Simon mall nationwide. Local malls include The Forum Shops at Caesars and The Tower Shops at Stratosphere.
The applications are available through March at the Concierge Service Center at The Forum Shops. Complete applications and supporting information must be returned by March 31 to be considered for the scholarship.
For more information about this program, visit the Simon Property Group website at www.simon.com.
