Goals list unveiled for libraries

Las Vegas-Clark County Library District Executive Director Daniel Walters presented so many goals for the district in the coming year that some board members wondered if the plan was too aggressive.
Among the goals is to develop a strategic planning process, look at consolidating with the North Las Vegas Library District, replacing personal computers, integrating all the urban branches' phones for better service and to review the district's financial policies and budgeting.
In all Walter's presented 21 primary goals to improve the district's organization and service, and trustee Mel Pohl questioned if that was too many.
"I think this is an important list, and I was pleased to see it, but I wonder if it's too aggressive," Pohl said.
Pohl expressed concerns that Walters would be held to the goals when it came time to evaluate his performance, but Walters said he would rather aim high and chance falling a little short of his goals than to lower the bar.
"I think it would be a mistake for the district to have a truncated list of objectives, and I feel in the main these goals can be achieved," Walters told the trustees at their Thursday meeting at the Whitney Library. "I feel these all represent critical tasks that need to be accomplished."
Some of the other key goals proposed by Walters include rewiring the district's computer center and branch networks, establishing a direct mail campaign to notify residents of services and events and for the director to build better relationships with elected officials and community leaders.
The board unanimously accepted the goals, and agreed that Walters would be in part evaluated on the completion of them. The board members will be able to add new goals if they choose at future meetings.
