Marathon runner killed sprinting to Vegas bus

Thursday, Feb. 10, 2000 | 9:53 a.m.

A San Francisco marathon runner who had hoped to qualify for the Summer Olympics has died of injuries suffered when he was struck by a van as he ran to catch a shuttle bus.

Police say 30-year-old Thomas Anthony Caruso was struck early Sunday as he ran across Tropicana Avenue to catch a bus that would take him to a race in Sloan, Nev., south of Las Vegas.

The Clark County Coroner's office said Caruso died Tuesday at University Medical Center. An autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death.

Witnesses said Caruso ran into the path of the van.

Caruso's sister, Gina, said he intended to run a half-marathon that began in Sloan, using the race as a warm-up for the Boston Marthon this spring. She said he wanted to run fast enough in Boston to qualify for the Olympic trials.
