Recreation center slated for NLV may don familiar design

Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2000 | 9:43 a.m.

Although plans for a new recreation center in North Las Vegas are still preliminary, the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board and staff are discussing ways to design the facility.

Wayne Schreiner, principal architect for HSA Architects Inc., made a presentation to the board Tuesday, demonstrating the feasibility of drafting a facility similar to the Black Mountain recreation center in Henderson.

His company designed Black Mountain, and Schreiner said it would be easy to tweak the design slightly to meet the needs of North Las Vegas residents.

Earlier this month the City Council decided to go forward with creating a new recreation design similar to Black Mountain, but with specific amenities suited for North Las Vegas.

Parks and Recreation Director Eric Dabney said the city is still negotiating a contract to hire HSA Architects Inc. It is important to follow the architect's established specifications as much as possible, he said.

"We don't want to reinvent the wheel to the point where we're designing a whole new facility," he said.

Schreiner explained that design has already been altered to fit Clark County and Las Vegas recreation centers.

"It's highly flexible." he said. "What we do here is defined by the programs and neighborhoods."
