Mississppi Gaming Association hopes to have new director by April

Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2000 | 4:08 a.m.

The changes in leadership and mission, expected to take place in 30-45 days, will put a new emphasis on lobbying state politicians and influencing public opinion, rather than pooling information and reacting to events.

"The MGA is in the process of evolving into more of a proactive trade association to represent the industry as other trade associations do in other industries and take a more active role in lobbying and public relations. In the past it's always been a lower profile association," he said Tuesday.

Burkholder, president of Treasure Bay Casino and Resort in Biloxi, said a committee will be appointed next week to choose an executive director from what he described as a very competitive field of candidates.

"The association will take a more active role in leadership, promotion and education," Burkholder said. "It needs to meet the new challenges the industry is facing, to plug in more, and carry out a grass-roots public relations and communication campaign."

MGA's previous executive director, Ernest J. Stebbins, resigned in October to become executive director of the national office of Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity, his college fraternity.
