Letter: Respect opinions on both sides

Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2000 | 9:35 a.m.

While I know one side can never convince the other, it is time for both sides to tolerate each other's position.

I am pro-choice and a longtime supporter and volunteer of Planned Parenthood. I know that nothing I could ever say would convince someone who believes differently that my position is correct. I'm not trying to change anyone's mind who believes differently than I do.

However, by the same token, it is also incorrect for people who are anti-choice to impose their views on others. We are all solid in our beliefs. I respect those who disagree with me but do not receive the same courtesy.

This matter should not be a political issue -- the U.S. Supreme Court has decided that privacy rights (including the right of reproductive choice) are guaranteed by the Constitution. There should be no further debate on that issue.

On Jan. 22 I celebrated the anniversary of the Roe vs. Wade decision. It is the right of others to disagree. But we should move on from this divisive issue and recognize the good deeds that Planned Parenthood does in our community. Planned Parenthood provides non-judgmental reproductive health care to men and women on a fee scale based on their ability to pay. There is nothing controversial about that.
