HB1110 would make it illegal to offer Internet gambling in South Dakota or start online gambling services in the state.
Rep. Roger Hunt, R-Brandon, said lawmakers should take steps now to prevent Internet gambling from gaining a foothold in the state.
"Internet gambling is growing, and it's growing at phenomenal rates," he said. "We need to start dealing with this particular problem."
The bill, which goes now to the state Senate, provides penalties of two years in prison on first offenses and five years for subsequent convictions.
