Utah loses star forward

Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000 | 9:57 a.m.

Hanno Mottola of Utah, one of the top forwards in college basketball, might miss the rest of the season because of elbow and thumb injuries.

The school said Monday that Mottola is awaiting further tests to see if he needs surgery.

"The thumb injury is bothering me more than the elbow," Mottola said.

He will not play Thursday against San Diego State and is out indefinitely.

The 6-foot-9 forward has a sprained left elbow and right thumb. Team trainer Trevor Jameson said the injuries could mean Mottola is through for the season.

Mottola was injured during No. 21 Utah's game at Air Force on Jan. 29. He finished the game and was in the lineup for Mountain West Conference games against New Mexico and UNLV last week, but shot only 7-for-25 against the two schools.

In 12 nonconference games, Mottola is averaging 17.7 points a game. In six league games, he is averaging 10.8.
