FBI says woman robbed two banks on way to Detroit casinos

Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000 | 9:48 a.m.

Kimberly Ann Carter was charged in U.S. District Court in Detroit last week with robbing two Standard Federal Bank branches, one in Southgate on Jan. 27 and one in Taylor Jan. 31.

She told investigators she took the money and headed to the MotorCity Casino, the FBI said.

After the second robbery, a Lincoln Park police officer saw Carter on Interstate 75 after bank employees identified the type of car she was driving. Carter ignored the officer's attempts to pull her over and later hit one police car before crashing into another that was blocking the road, according to an affidavit filed by FBI Agent William Townley.

Townley's affidavit said Carter told the FBI she owed money to a man she knew only as "Mike." The affidavit said Carter told them "Mike" had threatened her and forced her to rob the banks.

Wayne County Magistrate Donald Scheer released Carter on a personal bond and told her not to enter any gambling establishment or leave the Detroit area. She could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
