Third ambulance service allowed in Las Vegas

The Las Vegas City Council has cleared the way for a third ambulance service.
The council voted Wednesday to allow Southwest Ambulance to compete for non-emergency calls only.
The valley's main ambulance service - American Medical Response - had fought efforts by Southwest to move into the Las Vegas area. The Las Vegas Fire Department also responds to emergency calls within the city.
Mayor Oscar Goodman said he was concerned a third ambulance service could cause confusion and erode public confidence in the ambulance services.
"I'm concerned that if we allow an experiment in a situation where we don't have a problem, we could create a problem," Goodman said.
