Sellout means scalping for Bayno

Thursday, Feb. 3, 2000 | 2:45 a.m.

Rebels coach Bill Bayno can rest easy.

Unless there's a huge demand for UNLV-Utah tickets Friday, he'll get to hide his "Dumbo" ears after all.

Bayno and UNLV radio broadcaster Glen Gondrezick agreed to shave their heads if Saturday's game at the Thomas & Mack Center was a sellout by Friday night. That requires a crowd of 18,500, but approximately 5,500 tickets remained late Wednesday.

Gondrezick came up with the head-shaving scheme and challenged Bayno to join him. The coach was quick to agree, but admitted he would prefer to hide his "huge ears."

"They used to call me 'Dumbo' when I was in high school," Bayno said. "I guess my head caught up to my ears a little bit, but if I do have to shave, you're going to see some big listeners on the sideline."

The Rebels haven't had a packed house since March 3, 1992, Jerry Tarkanian's final game as UNLV coach, when 18,944 witnessed a 65-53 victory over Utah State.
