Council to continue televising work card appeals

The Las Vegas City Council has decided to continue televising appeals by people who are denied Metropolitan Police work cards.
The issue surfaced when councilman Lawrence Weekly complained about the process used in denying the work card permits, which are needed for a wide array of jobs in Southern Nevada. Under the system, the city council decides the appeals at a public meeting shown on the city's TV station.
Weekly said that is humiliating for the applicant and the ACLU agreed.
Sheriff Jerry Keller defended the procedure Wednesday, saying most applicants are approved, and the system protects the public from thieves, child molesters and other criminals.
