Letter: Same-sex marriage advocate full of contradictions

Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000 | 9:23 a.m.

I like, though, how he discerned that a "group of individuals finds it necessary" to act on what he considers to be a "mundane" issue, yet idealistically touts support for "far more pressing needs, such as hunger, homelessness and ... needs of our senior citizens." To paraphrase Henry David Thoreau, "For every thousand hacking at the leaves of evil, there is one striking at the root." I believe Mr. Kramer to be a leaf-hacker. With strong, stable homes, I believe his "pressing needs" would become far less threatening issues.

Another assumption: "As to the issue of marriage, ... the so-called straight community has managed to demonstrate its failure in this endeavor ..." Check the wedding announcements in this paper sometime. Also, what have you done, in Colorado or Nevada, to strengthen communities?

Another assumption: Anyone with moral values is a "religious zealot," set out to create ill-will in their communities, having nothing better to do. Hmm .... maybe they're concerned about hunger, homelessness, etc., etc., etc. Is the use of "religious zealot" somewhat "hateful"?

Mr. Kramer, your letter presents you as a dichotomy; embracing the fruits of freedom without tending the garden; espousing tolerance without being tolerant. That, to me, seems to be the prevailing trend among those whose goals are short term.
