Plenty to do during Black History Month

Organizations across the Las Vegas Valley will celebrate the accomplishments of black people throughout February as the nation observes Black History Month.
The celebration was begun in the 1920s by noted black educator Carter Godwin Woodson.
Woodson, a son of former slaves, lived from 1875 to 1950. Among his many accomplishments was the creation of the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History in Chicago in 1915.
He also was the founder of Negro History Week, which became Black History Month in 1976.
Woodson chose February because it was when black activist Frederick Douglass (1817-1895) and President Abraham Lincoln were born.
