Western advances to LV quarterfinals

Wendel West scored 22 points topping four Western players in double figures as the Warriors advanced to the quarterfinals of the Las Vegas Prep Championships with a 69-62 boys basketball victory over Irvine, Calif., Wednesday at Las Vegas High.
Tim Day added 13 points for Western while Patrick Stinnett chipped in 12 and Brandon Weaver 11.
In other games involving local teams, Martrel Johnson scored 29 points while Edmond Parrotte added 24 to pace Durango past Carson, Calif., 84-68; Keith Richardson's 19 points lifted Cheyenne over Marana, Ariz., 72-62; Arroyo Grande, Calif., downed Mojave 64-54; Cimarron-Memorial beat Basic 58-45 behind Jason Petrimoulx's 21 points; host Las Vegas routed Coalinga, Calif., 88-41 as Zach Queen scored 24 points; Peninsula, Calif., whipped Clark 63-48; Green Valley topped Hug 70-51 as Mitch Platt (13) and Ramond White (12) combined for 25 points; Gardena, Calif., downed Cimarron 62-43; and Canyon Springs, Calif., edged Silverado 56-54.
In other tournaments, Valley buried Pahrump Valley 96-54 and Chaparral defeated Virgin Valley 61-51 at Carson City while Palo Verde topped South Tahoe 58-48 in San Diego. In girls' action, it was Chaparral over Lincoln County 48-35 and Virgin Valley over The Meadows 34-24 at the Reid Gardner Tournament.
