LV courthouse builder sued by subcontractors

Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000 | 10:25 a.m.

Two lawsuits were filed by subcontractors against J.A. Jones Construction Co., the general contractor of the new Las Vegas Federal Courthouse, to recover allegedly unpaid fees for work done on the building.

Flooring Co. Inc. of Las Vegas sued J.A. Jones in U.S. District Court, alleging it defaulted on a $236,725 payment for carpets and flooring tiles.

John Bond, J.A. Jones' attorney, declined comment.

In another U.S. District Court suit, PDM Strochal Inc. of Stockton, Calif., sued J.A. Jones, alleging it defaulted on a $3.288 million payment for steel stairs and a metal deck installed at the courthouse.

"PDM is seeking to recover costs outside of its original contract and these costs were incurred due to change orders and additional work performed," Bond said. "J.A. Jones believes PDM is entitled to some compensation and is therefore submitting a claim to the General Services Administration for additional monies owed for work done on the project. These claims include what PDM and other subcontractors and J.A. Jones are asking."

The GSA is the government agency charged with the responsibility of constructing federal office buildings.
