Bayno denies SI allegations

Ex-UNLV basketball coach Bill Bayno won't be dissuaded from seeking "fair compensation" for his remaining contract, despite published allegations about his personal life, his attorney said.
Bayno on Thursday largely denied a Sports Illustrated article linking him to Atlanta strip club owner Steve Kaplan, a federal racketeering defendant, and questioned the timing of the story.
Citing court documents, Sports Illustrated reported that Kaplan sent two strippers to Las Vegas in June 1998 to engage in sex with Bayno at The Mirage.
"Regrettably, Coach Bayno finds it more than a little suspicious that an article making an allegation regarding his personal life of several years ago is released now, while he is in the middle of negotiations with (UNLV)," attorney Steve Owens said.
As to whether the information was fed to Sports Illustrated to embarrass Bayno, Owens said, "(Bayno) does not intend to exchange personal attacks with anyone. It is (his) desire to continue to conduct himself with the same class and dignity with which (UNLV president Carol Harter) described him when she announced his dismissal."
