Winter officially arrived at 5:37 a.m. and the wintry weather was to make its appearance in the Sierra and western Nevada by afternoon.
Winds of 20-40 mph were likely in the valleys around Reno and Carson City with gusts to 80 mph over the mountain ridges.
Rain or snow were likely through the afternoon and evening from around Lake Tahoe north with the snow levels hovering between 6,000 and 6,500 feet.
Unsettled weather will continue through Christmas Eve on Sunday, but there's little likelihood of a white Christmas.
The rest of northern Nevada will be partly cloudy with just a chance of snow showers through Sunday and brisk winds today.
Southern Nevada should see clear skies and only a slim chance of any precipitation.
