Letter: Supreme Court’s action shall live in infamy

Thursday, Dec. 21, 2000 | 10:16 a.m.

Now that the U.S. Supreme Court, comprised of seven Republicans and two Democrats, has appointed 5-4 (all Republicans) G.W. Bush president, let us look at where we are: The Republicans control the House, the Senate and soon the executive branch, plus the Republican Supreme Court. All branches of government are now controlled by Republicans. The voice of 50,438,000 voters who voted for Gore, with a 338,000 majority in the popular vote, have been muted by the Supreme Court.

To the following groups that voted for Bush, I say the following: Seniors, don't cry if your Social Security benefits are decreased. Women, don't cry -- not if, but when -- Roe v. Wade is reversed, and do not blame anyone but yourself. Union members who voted for Bush, don't come crying when anti-labor legislation is passed. To those African-Americans who voted for Bush, don't come crying when all vestiges of affirmative action are gone. And finally, to those Greens who voted for Ralph Nader, don't come crying when the nuclear waste trucks come down U.S. 95 en route to Yucca Mountain.

Fifty-nine years ago, speaking of Pearl Harbor, FDR said that "day shall live in infamy." Dec. 12, 2000, when the Supreme Court appointed Bush the 43rd president, shall live in infamy as well.

Finally, to the Gore voters who thought your vote counted, look at what the Supreme Court did in Florida and think again, think hard.
