New fire station to open Monday

Henderson will open its third new fire station this year on Monday, giving the city eight stations.

The 8,000-square-foot facility, located at 891 Coronado Center Drive, cost $2 million and is considered the prototype for future fire stations in Henderson, city officials said.

The building is designed to blend in with the architectural standards in the surrounding neighborhood.

Station 98 will house a captain, engineer, firefighter and a firefighter-paramedic on each shift.

World record sought with dreidels

The second annual Hanukkah Happening will be held 1-3 p.m. Sunday at the Jewish Community Center of Southern Nevada, 3909 S. Maryland Parkway.

The community center will try to break the world record for the most dreidels spun at one time. This event will be for all ages. For more information or to register, call 794-0090.

Food labels needed for new van

St. Jude's Ranch for Children has spent the past few months collecting soup labels to earn a new van and needs 150,000 more.

The group needs to collect 1.1 million labels from Campbell's and other participating products.

In addition to Campbell's, labels from products including Franco American gravies, Spaghettios and Pasta, Pepperidge Farm soups and crackers, as well as V8 juices and Prego sauces can be donated.

The ranch needs the van to get children to and from doctors' appointments, school and activities.

The new van will be added to the fleet of five vehicles St. Jude's Ranch has earned by collecting soup labels.

Junior high students invited to party

A safe and fun way for junior high school students to celebrate the holidays is at a "Pre-New Year's Bash," 9 p.m.-1 a.m. Dec. 29 at Central Christian Church, 1001 New Beginnings Drive, Henderson.

Cost is $15 and includes food, drink, fun, games, skateboarding ramps, graffiti contest, junk car smash, 3-on-3 basketball and prizes.

Reference work at state library

A new reference work for those wanting to know more about Braille is available for public use at the Nevada State Library and Archives in Carson City.

"Braille: Into the Next Millennium," written by more than two dozen experts traces Braille from its beginnings through current uses will also be available at local libraries in Braille and recorded formats in January.
