Veteran White House reporter Thomas to speak
Monday, Dec. 18, 2000 | 10:55 a.m.
Veteran White House correspondent Helen Thomas will be the featured speaker at a Jan. 12 fund-raiser for CLASS! Publications, a nonprofit newspaper for, by and about local high school students.
Drawing from her 37-year journalism career in which she covered eight presidents, Thomas will give her perspective on the just-concluded presidential election.
The former "Dean of the White House Press Corps" worked for United Press International for many years before retiring last year and becoming a columnist for Hearst Newspapers. Her column appears periodically in the Sun.
The fund-raiser, "An Evening With Class," will be in the Islander Ballroom of Mandalay Bay. A no-host cocktail reception is 6 p.m.; dinner is at 7 p.m. Entertainment will be provided by area high school musicians.
Honorary co-chairwomen of the event are Assemblywoman Barbara Buckley, D-Las Vegas, who is the founding president of CLASS, and County Commissioner Myrna Williams, who is a founding board member. Tickets are $200 per person. Call 895-1504 for reservations by Jan. 4.
CLASS, which is distributed to Clark County high schools, is unique in the country for its format, concept and content. Most of the articles are submitted by area students.
