The Public Utilities Commission of Nevada has licensed the parent company of Nevada Bell to offer local telephone service throughout the state.
In a 2-0 vote Thursday, commissioners approved the application of San Antonio-based SBC Telecom Inc. for certification to provide service in Las Vegas and other areas currently not served by Nevada Bell.
Nevada Bell has lines into 375,000 homes and businesses in 13 of Nevada's 17 counties and will be able to compete in Las Vegas with Sprint and several smaller local carriers.
