May 8: Washington Post Wins 57th Pulitzer Prize
Story: The Washington Post won two Pulitzer Prizes Monday, one for it's investigation of Watergate.
The Gold Medal Award cited two Post reporters, Carl Bernstein, 29, and Robert Woodward, 30, for the dominant role they played in investigating the Watergate scandal.
June 9: Jury May Probe Sun Case
Story: Possibilities that Las Vegas may have been involved in activities of the Watergate conspirators was made public in May with the disclosure that the safe of Sun Publisher Hank Greenspun was a possible target. At the time it was reported that papers involving Democratic presidential hopeful Edmund Muskie would be the target.
However, in a May 22 news conference Greenspun indicated that the alleged 1972 break-in may have been to obtain papers involving Howard Hughes, not Muskie.
July 18: Gas Crisis Blamed on Top Oil Firms
Story: The Federal Trade Commission accused the eight largest U.S. oil companies Tuesday of monopolistic refining and marketing practices that have boosted their profits, forced American motorists to pay inflated prices and contributed to the gasoline shortage.
Oct. 11: Nixon Launches Search for Agnew Replacement
Story: President Nixon told Republican congressional leaders late Wednesday afternoon that he is open to all suggestions for a successor to former Vice President Spiro T. Agnew.
