Open house set at visitor center
National Park Service rangers at the Lake Mead National Recreation Area will host an open house 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Alan Bible Visitor Center.
Refreshments will be served and reservations can be made for each of five hikes by calling 293-8990 or stopping by the visitor center just off Highway 93, northeast of Boulder City.
Kids can learn table setting, manners
A culinary arts workshop will be held 9:30-11:30 a.m. for children 5-8 years old and 12:30-2:30 p.m. for those 9-12 Saturday at the Silver Springs Recreation Center, 1951 Silver Springs Parkway in Henderson.
The workshop is part of an ongoing culinary arts series with an emphasis on manners and etiquette. Fee is $20.
The workshop includes instructions for making appetizers for holidays, as well as lessons in table setting, napkin ring making, and etiquette. For information, call 435-3814.
Retired executives schedule a workshop
The Las Vegas chapter of the Service Corps of Retired Executives will present its next "How to Really Start Your Own Business" workshop at 8:30 a.m. Thursday at the Foley Federal Building, 300 Las Vegas Blvd. South, Suite 1100.
SCORE counselors will cover marketing, cash flow, the business plan and a check list for licensing, permits and other requirements.
The cost is $45 and includes a 292-page reference manual and a workbook to help analyze your business idea. For directions, more information or to pre-register, call 388-6104.
Projects sought for funding from grant
Community Chest Inc. of Virginia City has received $1.5 million in funding from the Corporation for National Service.
They will be seeking demonstration partnerships across the state to participate in this project and distribute funding in the following areas: Reno, Lake Tahoe, rural communities and Las Vegas. The new grant is called Communities, Higher Education, and School Partnership and at least five partnerships will be targeted for awards of up to $50,000 each year for three years. Criteria for applications include partnerships whose members represent non-profit organizations, K-12 schools, higher education and who have an interest in supporting service-learning.
