Feb. 27: Historic China Talks End
Story: President Nixon and Premier Chou En-lai wound up five days of historic talks yesterday with "basic agreement" on some issues, apparently including a general pledge to seek accord throughout Asia.
May 1: Nixon Vows to Keep Bombing North Viet
Story: Secretary of State William F. Rogers said yesterday that President Nixon will take "all military measures necessary" -- short of nuclear weapons and the reintroduction of U.S. ground troops -- to defeat the North Vietnamese invasion and permit South Vietnam to survive.
May 3: Hoover's Body Lies in State
Story: J. Edgar Hoover, who became an American institution as the first and only director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation for nearly a half-century, died of a heart attack early yesterday while he slept. He was 77.
June 19: Another Bay of Pigs Effort?
Story: The apparent leader of five men, arrested early Saturday for breaking into the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee, was identified as an affluent Miami Realtor with important Republican Party links in Florida.
June 30: Condemned Men Cheer Death Ban
Story: Many prisoners locked in death rows shouted with joy at the fateful 5-4 Supreme Court decision outlawing the death penalty yesterday.
Sept. 6: Arabs Massacre 11 Israeli Olympians; Five Others Die
Story: Arab terrorists trying to flee the country killed nine Israeli Olympic team members they were holding hostage Tuesday when German police opened fire on them. At least 16 persons died in a day of terror that jeopardized the 20th Olympic games.
Dec. 28: Andes Crash Survivors To Make Full Statement
Story: An Uruguayan diplomat said Wednesday his 16 countrymen who survived 70 days in the wreckage of their chartered airplane in the Andes mountains "are not going to hide anything" in a collective statement they are preparing about reports of cannibalism at the crash site.
